Fight Leukemia with Green Tea

January 6, 2009
By: Gale Maleskey, MS, RD

In 2005, we reported on the findings of researchers at the Mayo Clinic, which suggested that green tea halts leukemia. The researchers found that EGCG, the antioxidant green tea is known for, may kill leukemia cells by interrupting the communication signals they need to survive. The researchers also presented four case studies of people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) who had seen regression of their disease with the use of green tea extract.

Now, a new study supports the use of green tea against leukemia, this time from the prestigious Harvard School of Public Health. The study compared people who had leukemia with those who did not, and found that people aged 16 to 29 who drank the most green tea had less than half the risk of having leukemia as those who drank the least. Those drinking the most tea consumed 550 mg or more of EGCG-rich catechins a day, the equivalent of about 5 ½ cups. (Kuo, YC, et al. Cancer Causes Control. 2008 Aug 28.)

Leukemia isn’t a type of cancer we normally think of having any control over. The truth is, there are many types of leukemia, and probably many causes as well. Researchers have strong suspicions about four possible causes: natural or artificial ionizing radiation (radon or x-rays) , certain kinds of chemicals (petrochemicals, benzene, hair dyes), some viruses (HIV, HTLV-1 and -2), and certain rare genetic predispositions (a family history of Fanconi anemia). Your risk for CLL also goes up with age.

Besides fighing leukemia, green tea may also reduce your risk for ovarian cancer and other types of cancer, ease rheumatoid arthritis, lower cholesterol and prevent mental decline—the list goes on and on. If you have CLL, ask your doctor about adding green tea extract to your treatment. Be sure to use a high-quality, standardized extract to be sure that you are getting the amount of EGCG shown to be effective by this study.

The Anti-Aging Bottom Line: It’s likely that green tea offers protection from some of the risk factors for leukemia. One thing we know for sure: it never hurts to drink green tea or to take a green tea supplement. For the best protection, we recommend using a standardized green tea extract containing at least 70% EGCG on a daily basis.

Antioxidants May Boost Cancer Treatment

June 26, 2007
By: Jean Carper

There is some controversy over whether patients on chemotherapy should take antioxidants. The main concern: Do supplements like vitamins E and C, beta carotene and selenium counteract cancer treatment?A new review of 1,500 patients found that taking antioxidant supplements with chemotherapy actually might increase survival rates, tumor shrinkage and the patient's ability to tolerate chemotherapy. Discouraging antioxidants is not scientifically valid, suggests the study, which was co-authored by Robert Newman, Ph.D., of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Keith Block, M.D., medical and scientific director of the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Care.

Prevent Alzheimer’s

January 9, 2009
By: Philip S. Chua, MD, FACS, FPCS

Alzheimer’s, a severely devastating disease of the brain that, in an instant, totally robs and erases the person’s memory, is a nightmare everyone fears. When it occurs, it happens so fast like transforming a well-lit room into total darkness with a flip of a switch. The entire memory bank is emptied, turning even a great, talented mind and a charismatic communicator, like the late President Ronald Reagan, one of the best presidents the United States has ever had, into a confused, non-verbal, totally dependent and helpless stranger, oblivious of his environment, his loved ones, and even of his own self.

The post-mortem pathology found among Alzheimer’s patients is the abnormal and extensive build-up of beta-amyloid plaque in the brain, which damages the nerve cells and their connections, resulting in memory loss.

CGCG From Green Tea
A new study from the University of South Florida (USF) which came out September 2005, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, reported that high doses of an antioxidant ingredient in green tea, called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), significantly reduced by 54% the formation of beta-amyloid proteins in the brain of laboratory mice that were first genetically induced to develop Alzheimer’s for this particular experiment, and then treated with high doses of EGCG.

This substance is among antioxidants called flavonoids found in plants. Abstinence from red meat and eating a diet that is rich in vegetables and fruits are known to protect active people against heart attack, stroke and cancer.

Drinking Green Tea Not Enough
There are a variety of antioxidants in green tea, and some of these have been found to decrease the ability of EGCG to reduce beta-amyloid production. So, drinking green tea alone is definitely not enough to ward off Alzheimer’s. There is obviously a need to selectively concentrate the EGCG antioxidant to override the negative effects of the other flavonoids in green tea.

More extensive studies in the laboratory are needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of EGCG, followed by clinical studies in humans, before we get the final word on this issue. But certainly, green tea is a healthier beverage compared to the colas, alcoholic drinks and to the so-called “energy drinks” that are now flooding the market and are potentially dangerous to health, with their irresponsible and baseless claims.

Fatty Acids from Plants Show Promise
A fatty acid in safflower, corn, and sunflower oils may help prevent Alzheimer’s in some people, according to Sara M. Debanne, PhD, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland.

“In people who did not have the inherited Alzheimer’s risk factor gene (ApoEe4), eating a diet rich in linoleic acids reduced the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by about 50%. But in those who carried the disease-causing gene, linoleic acids appeared to raise the risk of developing the mind-robbing disease evenfurther”, says the researcher.

Statins Against Alzheimer’s
Debanne says she suspects “the fatty acids' cholesterol-lowering properties account for their protective effect in some people, since several studies have shown that the cholesterol-lowering statin drugs appear to ward off the disease.”

This research finding may be a good reason for people to get tested to find out if they carry the ApoEe4 gene.

Fish Fat Fights Alzheimer’s
New studies from the Louisiana State University’s Neuroscience Center of Excellence revealed that decosahexaenoic (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like herring, mackerel and salmon, etc., might help prevent Alzheimer’s. The DHA helps the brain cells by (1) minimizing the production of beta-amyloid proteins, and (2) increasing the production of another protein called NPD1 which helps the brain cells stay alive.

Previous researches have shown that people who eat fish at least 4 times a week, or those who take refined omega-3 from fish oil in gelcaps twice daily, reduce their risk of developing this dreaded disease, compared to those who hardly eat fish. A healthy lifestyle -- daily exercise, abstinence from tobacco, moderation in alcohol ingestion, low-fat, low-carb diet, like eating vegetables, nuts and grains, and fish INSTEAD OF (not together with) red meats -- significantly lowers the risk, not only for Alzheimer’s, but also for cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

Green Tea Helps Arthritis With Its Anti-inflammatory Properties

Sunday December 28, 2008
By: Carol & Richard Eustice

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other types of arthritis. While NSAIDs are effective against inflammation, they also are associated with adverse events. You may be interested in an alternative treatment that would still battle inflammation but with less adverse effects -- one that may even be good for you. Animal studies have shown that green tea significantly reduced the severity of arthritis. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), green tea affects arthritis by causing changes in arthritis-related immune responses. For example, green tea suppresses cytokine IL-17 and antibodies to Bhsp65 -- and it increases cytokine IL-10. Based on this evidence, researchers suggest that green tea -- one of the most widely consumed drinks in the world -- be taken seriously as a dietary treatment for rheumatoid arthritis when used together with conventional treatments.

Turmeric & Green Tae helpful in anti-cancer drugs

January 9th, 2009
By: Darshana Chaturvedi, TNN

VADODARA: Green tea leaf and turmeric can help reduce negative effects of anti-cancer drugs taken by patients during treatment. Series of
researches conducted in the last five years by M S University's pharmacy department on animals have revealed that green tea leaf and curcumin help in reducing the ill-effects of anti-cancer drugs on a patient's heart.

Professor R Balaraman along with few research students from department of pharmacy in MSU's faculty of technology and engineering, has been screening herbal drugs on doxorubicin induced cardiotoxicity. Doxorubicin is a widely used drug in the treatment of cancer. It is observed that in the long run this drug causes congestive heart failure due to formation of toxic drug metabolites in heart. The study also reveals that these herbs help in maintaining blood pressure to normal level and effectively reduce heart cell damage.

"During our experiments, we found that turmeric and green tea produced beneficial effects on the heart of animals that were previously treated with doxorubicin. These herbs increased antioxidant level in heart and reduced doxorubicin induced formation of free radicals (oxygen species with free electron)," said Balaraman.

Cancer treatment can harm a patient's heart, sometimes fatally but many physicians do not adequately monitor their patients for such damage or manage their care to minimize it, said Balaraman. He added that it was critical that cancer treatment should not substantially weaken a patient's heart. "During our study we found that green tea and turmeric protect heart against doxorubicin cardiotoxicity without affecting its anti-cancer activity," he said.

Through experiments they also observed that herbs effectively reduced heart cell damage caused due to intake of anti-cancer drugs. A paper on the findings was presented at Conference of Indian Pharmacology Society at AIIMS by Vipin Dhote and co-authored by Balaraman. The paper was adjudged as best research paper at the conference. Researchers suggest that their experiments have shown positive results on animals and further clinical trials on humans are required.
